2.6 [31] DUKE JING BUILT THE CHANGLAI[1] TERRACE AND WANTED TO DECORATE IT. YANZ I REMONSTRATED. [2]
Duke Jing built the Changlai Terrace and wanted to have it decorated. Once, just as a storm was brewing, the Duke entered together w ith Yanzi and they sat down to drink w ine; m usic was ordered to be played in the hall. A fter they had drunk enough and became tipsy,Yanzi sang a song:
The ears of grain cannot be harvested,
The autumn w ind came; all have w ithered and fallen.
Wind and rain did not kill the crops,
It was the Supreme Ruler who ruined and destroyed them.
His song ended and he turned to look at the Duke w ith tears in his eyes; then he stretched to his full height and danced. The Duke moved toward Yanzi and stopped him, saying: “Today my Master has bestowed warnings upon me; this is my fault.”
Consequently, the Duke gave up drinking, abolished the conscript labor, and did not bring the Changlai Terrace to completion.
注释
[1]While some dictionaries and commentators identify lai庲with tai 台 (“terrace”),others identify it w ith she 舍 (“dw elling house”); in the latter case, the sentence would read: “Duke Jing built a large dwelling house and wanted to decorate it.”
[2]Item 2.6 [31] ↔ Item 7.12 [182].
