7 account for; go into; set out

● account for意为“说明” “解释”,主语多为人,for后接名词ing分词或名词词组,有时account后接to sb表示说明的对象。如:He could’t account for his foolish mistake.(他无法解释他愚蠢的过失。)How do you account for losing such a large sum of money?(你怎样对丢失这样一大笔钱作交代呢?)Idleness of ten account for poverty.(贫困常常起因于懒惰。)The boy has to account to his father for the money he gives him for school expenses.(这男孩不得不对父亲说出给他交学费的钱用到哪里去了。)

● go into作“论述” “议论” “详述”之意后接名词、代词等不用作被动语态,如:We need to go into the question of costs.(我们需要详细讨论一下费用问题。)We can go into that later, can’t we?(那个问题我们以后讨论,好吗?)The US national security advisor declined to go into details about the info ahead of the war against Iraq.(美国国家安全顾问拒绝谈论有关对伊拉克战前的情报细节。)They haven’t enough time to go into the history of the case, so perhaps you could summarize the main points.(他们来不及讨论这个案子的来龙去脉,因此,你或许能归纳出要点来。)

● set out是动副型词组,一般不分开使用,意指清楚而有条理“说明或阐述”论据、真相,多以书面形式阐述,可用被动修整。如:The arguments for and against the scheme have been set out in a booklet which will appear shortly.(赞同和反对这一计划的评论己在一本即将出版的小册子里说明。)Be sure to set out the points of your argument carefully.(请务必小心陈述你的论点。)He has written a letter to “The Times” setting out his views.(他已写信给《泰晤士报》陈述了他的观点。)The committee’s plans are set out in the report.(委员会的计划在报告中阐明了。)
