Defining a vRealize Operations solution
vRealize Operations solutions extend the capabilities of vRealize Operations by integrating with external management tools.
Some solutions are delivered with vRealize Operations. Other solutions can be added as management packs. Solutions that are delivered as management packs include dashboards, reports, alerts, and data adapters. Data adapters are used by vRealize Operations to manage communication and integration with other products, applications, and functionalities:
Once the solution management pack is installed and data adapters are configured, you can use vRealize Operations analytics and alerting tools. To download a solution for vRealize Operations, go to the VMware Solution Exchange web portal.
Let's take a deeper look into it as an example of the out-of-the-box solutions in vRealize Operations. The VMware vSphere solution manages the connection between vRealize Operations and your VMware vCenter Server instances, and provides the ability to run actions on those instances:
This solution consists of two data adapters:
- The vCenter adapter: Using the vCenter adapter, you can monitor the vSphere objects, such as clusters, hosts, virtual machines, datastores, resource pools, and so on.
- The vCenter Python Actions adapter: Using the vCenter Python Actions adapter, you can perform actions from vRealize Operations to modify objects on your managed vCenter Server instance. For example, you can power on or off virtual machines, set the CPU resources for a virtual machine, or delete unused snapshots from a virtual machine.
Adapters connect to and collect data from external sources in multiple ways:
- API calls
- Command-line interface
- Database queries (relational database, CSV, XML, and so on)
This vSphere solution also provides content to monitor vSphere objects, such as inventory trees, metrics, dashboards, views, reports, alert definitions, and symptom definitions.
