The TTL field in IP is quite a helpful field. When seeing a TTL value, it explicitly indicates how many routers the packet has passed. Since operating system defaults are 64,128, or 256, and the maximum number of hops that a packet will cross through the internet is 30 (much less in private networks), if for example we see a value of 120, then the packet has passed 8 routers, and a value of 52 indicates that the packet has passed 12 routers.
