Provisioning desktop devices

The WCD tool makes it easy to create provisioning packages, or set up devices to use within your organization.

To provision desktop devices using the WCD tool, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Start button to open the Start menu.
  2. Click the WCD tool from the Start menu.
  3. A short time thereafter, the WCD tool will open as shown in the following screenshot:

  1. To get started, click Provision desktop devices.
  2. Once the New project wizard opens, enter the name of the project, browse the project folder to specify the location where you want to store the project, and enter a description of the project, as shown in Figure 5.4. Click Next to continue:

  1. On the Set up device page, enter the device name (see Figure 5.5), and then click Next:

  1. On the Set up network page, enter Wi-Fi network information such as Network SSID, Network type, and Password, as in Figure 5.6, and then click Next:

  1. On the Account Management page, select the Local admin option, enter the User name and Password, as shown in Figure 5.7, and then click Next:

  1. On the Add applications page, click Add an Application, enter the Application name, specify the Installer Path, click the Add button (see Figure 5.8), and then click Next:

  1. On the Add certificates page, click Add a certificate, enter the Certificate name, specify the Certificate path, click Add button, as in Figure 5.9, and then click Next:

  1. On the Finish page, review the information presented in the Summary section, and then click the Create button, as shown in Figure 5.10:

  1. On the Start page, under Recent projects, you will notice your project (see Figure 5.11):

Since Windows 10, version 1703, Microsoft has renamed WICD to WCD. However, it has removed the Windows imaging. Thus, in terms of customizing Windows 10 desktop devices, Microsoft recommends that you use the old Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM), which is part of the Windows ADK .
