Symphonic Painting YUN

Symphonic Painting YUN adopts the form of symphonic painting in an attempt to vividly display the unique romantic charm embodied in Eastern philosophy and musical culture. It is original in that the composer derived inspiration from the linearity conception and splash-ink technique of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting art in order to achieve rich timbre lines and a dynamic flow of sounds, on whose basis the overall structural tension and the colorful symphonic pictures are created. It is intended to express the charm of Eastern musical culture: gentle, free, unrestrained, but tough as well. It consists of two large parts, namely“motion in stillness and stillness in motion”, thereby depicting two symphonic pictures, toughness in gentleness and gentleness in toughness.

Completed in 1992, this piece won the“Grand Prize”for Large-Scale Orchestral Works (the first ever awarded at the competition) in The Second South Korea Composition Competition in December, 1999. It was premiered by the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the final concert of the competition.
