Cardinal Numbers
We usually use Arabic system. Arabic numerals are 1,2,3,4, etc. The numbers used to count the objects in a group are called cardinal numbers:1,2,3,4 etc. The odd numbers are those beginning with 1 and counting by twos:1,3,5,7,9, etc. The even numbers are those beginning with 2 and counting by twos:2,4,6,8,10, etc.

Section One Discriminating Between Teens or Tens
The teen numbers those between thirteen and nineteen are often confused with the multiples of ten:thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, and ninety. This exercise is for practice in hearing the differences in the following pairs of numbers:13-30,14-40,15-50,16-60, 17-70,18-80,19-90. It is important to listen to the last part of each word. Read the following pairs.

Section Two Hundreds
The hundreds are any of the three-digit numbers from 100 to 999. The hundreds consist of three digits. The first digit on the right is called the ones digit. The next is called the tens digit. The third is the hundreds digit. For example:987 is read nine hundred and eighty-seven.
A. Listen carefully and write down the numbers. Column 1 to Column 4 will be read twice. Column 5 to Column 8 will be read only once.
B. Listen to the following exercises for different courses. You must be sure to write down both numbers correctly. The prepositions“to”and“through”are commonly used. For example, you will hear“please read pages 123 to 189 and pages 208 through 264”, and you should write down with the abbreviation of pages as follows:“pp. 123-189, pp. 208-264”.
Now listen carefully, and write down the page numbers.

Section Three Thousands
The thousands are any of four-digit, five-digit or six-digit numbers from 1,000 to 999,999. The thousands are written as 1,000;2,000;3,000 etc. The ten thousands are written as 10,000;20,000;30,000 etc. The hundred thousands are written as 100,000;200,000;300,000 etc. For easy reading, numbers of more than four digits are separated by comma into groups of three digits each beginning at the right. For example:123,456 is read one hundred twenty-three thousand, four hundred and fifty-six.

Millions are any of seven-digit, eight-digit, nine-digit numbers from 1,000,000 to 999,999,999. Ten millions are written as 20,000,000. Hundred millions are written as 300,000,000. For example,123,456,789 is read as one hundred twenty-three million, four hundred fifty-six thousand, seven hundred and eighty-nine.

Billions are any of ten - digit, eleven - digit, twelve - digit numbers from 1,000,000,000 to 999,999,999,999. Ten billions are written like this as 20,000, 000,000. Hundred billions are written as 300,000,000,000. For example,123,456, 789,000 is read one hundred twenty-three billion, four hundred fifty-six million, seven hundred eighty-nine thousand. The following exercises will give practice in writing billions from dictation.
