FOREWORD
Chinese Tuina therapy is a science pertaining to the study of injuries to the skin, flesh, muscles, bones, qi, blood, zang-fu organs and meridians, at the same time it is a preventive method which can strengthen immunity and treat illnesses. Tuina is an essential aspect of traditional Chinese medicine with a long history of treating people of all ethnic groups and having significant results with pain. It has since become an independent subject with integrated theoretical systems. “Hands move along with thought and skills show up with the hands.” Tuina, which is loosely translated into massage therapy in English, is a TCM clinical technology requiring first and foremost doctors’ experiences and skills which are inherited from the masters through rigorous commitment. That is “the master may teach, but the progress is up to the hard work of the individual.”
Mr. Cui Shusheng has been a disciple of three famous experts from Beijing: Liu Shoushan, Lu Yinghua and Ma Zaishan. For ten years, Dr.Cui Shusheng Learned from these masters. He has strictly followed the old maxim and has learned from all factions. He has practiced medicine for decades. At present he is over 60 years old, but his clinic is still crowded with patients. His therapeutic regimen is a combination of manipulations and medicine, wise and skilful, always having a masterful effect. Although he has profound skills, he prefers teaching, learning and practicing by himself. Because of he never hide his skills from others, his students are numerous and learn through clinical experiences. He proposes that in order to learn Tuina or massage therapy, one should improve both medical techniques and self-cultivation. He has compiled the “Tuina manipulations Atlas of the famous senior TCM doctor Cui Shusheng” with inherited skills and self-taught unique techniques which has withstood the difficulties of time. The Atlas is comprised with introductory skills, directing qi, application of strength, making difficult tasks simple and bringing forth the new through the old so as to help young students improve themselves and exchange experiences with their counterparts.
Being entrusted to make the foreword I am glad to finish it. “April showers bring May flowers”. I hope that more scholars and counterparts can be benefit from this concise atlas written by Mr. Cui and more excellent works appear as well.
