Abstract

Modernization has been a polysemous word in the field of new modernization study. First of all, it refers to a worldwide phenomenon concerning the world frontiers of human development since about the 18th centu-ry and the process and practice to pursue, reach and maintain world frontier's levels.Secondly it has been a progressive change of human civilization with the transformation from traditional to modern paradigm which took place in all fields of civilization such as politics, economy, society and culture, etc.Thirdly it can be used as a development goal directly or indirectly, and among them, the modernized developed countries are willing to keep the most advanced level in the world, while non-modernized developing countries are working hard to catch-up and reach the modernized level in more short time.For example, the national objective of China is to become a moderately developed country in the middle of the 21st century and a modernized devel-oped country in the second half of the 21st century.

China Modernization Report started to be released in 2001，with different topics year by year, and fo-cused on the systematic studies of the facts and principles of world modernization, as well as the features and roads of China's modernization. It covered 131 countries in 5 continents and 97%of world population, with the time span of 400 years（from 1700 to 2100），involved modernization theories, level-related moderniza-tion（world, international, national, regional and urban modernization），field-related modernization（eco-nomic, social, cultural and ecological modernization）and sector-related modernization（agricultural, indus-trial and service modernization），and so on.

This book includes seven papers on new modernization studies and the overviews of 15 annual reports of China Modernization Report from 2001 to 2016. The Former focuses on the theoretic study of modernization, and discusses the principles and methods of world modernization and national advancement.The latter em-phasizes on the positive study of modernization, and analyses the great trends of world modernization and strategic choices of China modernization in the 21st century.
