Unit 4 Communication and Information Theory

Communication systems are designed to transmit information, which is unknown to the recipient until after it is received. More information is communicated to the recipient when he/she is “surprised” by the transmitted message. Information theory is a mathematical theory of communication as indicated by the title of Claude Shannon's seminal work.
