Background:
Allen is a vocational college student who has just graduated from college,majored in logistics management.Last week,he passed the interview of a famous third party logistics company in Guangzhou.As a new recruit,it is his first day to work.
Lee is Allen’s direct superior.
Mary is Allen’s workmate in the administration department.
Dialogue 1 Arriving at Company (see Figure 1-1)
Lee:Welcome to our company!
Allen:Thank you,I’m delighted to work here,Mr.Lee.It’s a great pleasure to see you again.
Lee:Ok,I’ll show you around first.
Lee:Now,this is our office block.We have all the departments here.Our company has seven business units.They are the administration department,marketing department,warehousing department,transportation department,delivery department,customer service department,and financial department.You will be crossed-trained in these departments within a year.
Allen:I’ll try my best.

Lee:Allen will have one week to understand logistics market in Guangdong and write a report to me.Then,he’ll start job rotation among marketing department,warehousing department,transportation department,delivery department,and customer service department.Allen,Mary will tell you what to do.
Allen:Nice to meet you,Mary.
Mary:That’s all right.I will try my best to assist you if you need any help.
Allen:Thank you very much.

Lee:How about the report?
Allen:So far,it doesn’t seem to be any problems.
Lee:Okay.How much have you done?
Allen:I’ve done about half of it.
Lee:When do you expect it to be finished?
Allen:It will be done by Friday.
Lee:Um...Can you finish it by Thursday?
Allen:All right.I will try.
Lee:That’s good.

Dialogue 4 Talking about Logistics (see Figure 1-4)
Allen:Lee,someone told me that you had been promoted to be the manager of warehousing department.Congratulations!
Lee:Oh,thank you!
Allen:Logistics has received more and more attention from different sectors of the society.
Lee:It is absolutely true! It is a recognized fact that all companies,small or large,do need logistics service.In the industrialized countries,logistics is now the last frontier for increasing benefits,since there is not much to do to improve production to lower the cost.
Allen:What about those developing countries,such as China? Does that mean logistics industry has developed quiet well in China?
Lee:China is a developing country,and it is developing very fast in these years.I attended a conference on logistics in China last year.The audience was confident that great changes had been made in logistics in the past 20 years or so.
Allen:But how can that be related to the economic growth?
Lee:This can be illustrated by figures.In 2000,the total logistics cost in China amounted to 20% of the GDP of that year,but in 2016 the figure had reduced to 15%.Of course this is still a very high percentage.In the industrialized countries such as USA or some European countries,the figure is about 10%.

Lee:Of course.
