Foreword I A book For The Young Generation With Challenging Spirit

Oh Myung, Minister of Science and Technology of South Korea

In 1964, when Korea had not yet shaken off poverty, Philip Hwang carried USD 50 to study in the United States, and eventually grew into one of the world famous entrepreneurs.

During his days abroad, he completed the studies of electrical engineering in undergraduate and graduate schools. Since then, as an electronic engineer, he successfully achieved a series of brilliant fruits. In 1975, he created his own terminals, PC and“TELE VIDEO”. His company grew into a large enterprise with capital of USD 2 billion later.

These brilliant achievements helped him win the prize of the Statue of Liberty issued by Congress of the United States in 1986 and was appointed to be the Technical Advisor to President George Bush in 1993, providing advice in cutting-edge technology.

Twenty years ago, I met President Philip Hwang for the first time. I served as the Secretary to the President then, responsible for science and technology. I visited“TELE VIDEO” during my business trip in the United States. The core policy of Korea was developing science and technology, just like the strategies of Chinese government. South Korea is small with poor natural resources, so we have to spare no effort in cutting-edge technology.

As a result, I proposed to President Hwang of the transfer and investment in the cutting-edge technology, then TERMINAL and PC as well as other technical requirements. President Hwang visited the Presidential Palace of Cheong Wa Dae and founded the“TELE VIDEO KOREA” and began to invest in his motherland and technology transfer. His efforts laid the foundation for the initial stage of IT industry in South Korea.

Now, South Korea is constantly developing industries for new technology, outstanding young talents are also devoted themselves into science and technology. We really need the spirits of continuous exploring and enterprising like President Hwang. I hope that young talents, especially those who dream of making outstanding achievements in engineering, read this autobiography written by President Hwang.
