On the Logical Certainty and Modern Significance of Wang-Niansun“Generative Analogy”
(The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tianjin University)
Abstract:Based on the understanding of science as a kind of deductive thoughts rather than technology, it is argued that the Qian-Jia scholarship and their academic products contain rich scientific and axiomatic thoughts in their exegetic and philological works. It is shown that one cannot see their viable protocols of arguments without revealing and understanding their exegetic theories formed by principles and techniques of text-criticism operations. Furthermore, this paper argues that there was a paradigm shift from Rationalism established by Qian-Jia(and Zhang-Huang, etc.)schools to Empiricism promoted by Hu Shi(and Fu Sinian etc.)after the May-Fourth Movement. The lack of theory-forming activities of the current academics in China in the studies of language, literature, history, etc.calls for a return to the traditional rationalism.
