Columbia University was founded in 1754 as King"s College by Royal Charter of King George II of England, and was renamed Columbia College in 1784. In 1896, the trustees officially authorized the use of yet another new name, Columbia University, and today the institution is officially known as "Columbia University in the City of New York." It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States.Columbia includes three undergraduate schools(Columbia College, the School of General Studies and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences), 13 graduate and professional schools, and a school of continuing education.Columbia is the home to the Pulitzer Prize, and has first-rate journalism program.It"s also the birthplace of FM radio. Columbia University is known for being pioneers in the pursuit of new academic disciplines and producing world-renowned innovators.

Philosophy: Columbia University is most known for its social science, engineering and history programs.The school"s philosophy is to provide the best general education program possible for its undergraduates. The school teaches students to reason, analyze, generate their own ideas and clearly express them. It also offers an undergraduate engineering program.
Language requirements: Columbia University expects international students whose native language is not English to submit scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS, even graduate school hopefuls who"ve completed their undergraduate education in a country whose official language is not English. The university doesn"t require an IELTS score from applicants for graduate study who"ve earned their undergraduate degree in an English-speaking country. Columbia"s graduate school requires a minimum IELTS score of 7.5.

所有国际生都享受与美国学生同等的待遇。只要学生的家庭经济状况达到申请助学金的要求,学校就会根据评估情况为其发放助学金。此外,优秀硕士生也可获经济资助或贷款;所有攻读博士生的学生都获经济资助,除免学杂费和医药保险费外,生活补助金每年约1.4万美元。需要注意的是哥伦比亚大学并不是所有的院系都设助学金和奖学金项目。
